Author : Jonas Jonasson

ISBN-10 :  1401324649

ISBN-13 : 978-1401324643

Paperback : 400 pages

The Plot :

A reluctant centenarian much like Forrest Gump (if Gump were an explosives expert with a fondness for vodka) decides it’s not too late to start over . . .

After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he’s still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn’t interested (and he’d like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash, some unpleasant criminals, a friendly hot-dog stand operator, and an elephant (not to mention a death by elephant).

It would be the adventure of a lifetime for anyone else, but Allan has a larger-than-life backstory: Not only has he witnessed some of the most important events of the twentieth century, but he has actually played a key role in them. Starting out in munitions as a boy, he somehow finds himself involved in many of the key explosions of the twentieth century and travels the world, sharing meals and more with everyone from Stalin, Churchill, and Truman to Mao, Franco, and de Gaulle. Quirky and utterly unique, The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared has charmed readers across the world.

Review :

A hilarious read! I loved it from the very first page until the end. The main characters are so distinctly culled out and make such an impression. There were moments where I laughed out loud and for the rest I was chuckling. What I loved most were the cameos by some of the most powerful political figures on the century and how well it was woven into the plot line. All in all it’s a wonderful escapist read.

Review :

Having been an Amy Poehler fan, longer than I can remember, I jumped at the chance to read this book and it did not disappoint. It is hilarious at times, and wise at times. Peppered with incidents from her life and advise that is not the kind you roll your eyes at, this makes for a fun, quick read. The insight into some of the SNL sketches and the relationships that the cast members build up is shown beautifully in this book.

The thing I loved most about the book has to be its personal tone. I felt like I was having a chat with Amy in my living room. An extremely fun read for any Amy Poehler fan.

ISBN-10 :  1447250613

ISBN-13 : 978-1447250616

Paperback : 441 Pages

The Plot :

An incredibly quirky, humorous and warm-hearted story about growing old disgracefully – and breaking all the rules along the way.

79-year-old Martha Andersson dreams of escaping her care home and robing a bank.

She has no intention of spending the rest of her days in an armchair and is determined to fund her way to a much more exciting lifestyle. Along with her four oldest friends – otherwise known as the League of Pensioners – Martha decides to rebel against the regulation imposed upon them. Together, they cause uproar: protesting against early bedtimes and plasticky meals.

As the elderly friends become more daring, they hatch a cunning plan to breakout of the dreary care home and land themselves in a far more attractive Stockholm establishment. With the aid of their Zimmer frames, they resolve to stand up for old-aged pensioners everywhere. And that’s when the adventure really takes off…

Review :

It’s been a while since I read a book like this. The story is simple and the characters loveable. A gang of oldies decide to live life by their own rules and to do that they need money and so they decide to be just like Robin Hood. The plot was gripping and with every page I turned I had a big smile on my face. I loved the way the plan and plot keeping in mind their shortcomings (they can’t walk to fast, they are not too steady on their feet, they can’t carry weight etc.) and playing to their strengths (people never suspect old people to be criminals).

Overall I enjoyed the book thoroughly. It kept me glued from start to finish and in my opinion that makes for a wonderful read. Highly recommended for anyone with an afternoon to kill and looking for a good laugh. I wish they make a movie based on this book and Betty White would make an amazing Martha!

ISBN-13 : 978-0553384222

Paperback : 224 pages

The Plot :

My Point… And I Do have One is the first book by comedienne Ellen DeGeneres. It is a collection of her hilarious take on multiple topics. It contains short chapters on various topics from her childhood or what people remember of it, things to do if you are stuck in an elevator, how to make her famous Frenchy French toast etc.

Overall it is a funny book that you might pick up if you are looking for a couple of laughs. My favourite chapter has to be ‘Letter to My Friend’ where Ellen explains the bizarre things that she has done at a party including giving a totally inappropriate gift as well as shaving the host’s dog etc. It is just a hilarious take on daily life and I read it when I was bored. It helped the situation and so it achieved its goal. It is a onetime read, nothing great, yet made me laugh when I need it.

But soon he realizes chasing dreams is not all that easy but it sure is a fun ride. After working really hard for it Walt manages to join to police force. Not everyone is happy about it but he manages to get in. Now he has to prove himself right and all the naysayers wrong.

Without too much help from his ageing limbs to chase around the bad guys, Walt has to rely on his wit and wisdom to bring the perps of Kansas city to justice. It’s a bumpy but often hilarious ride to see Walt and his partner, Ox, find very unorthodox ways of bringing criminals to justice. And they have plenty of help from their senior friends. We meet the sixty-five-year-old Willie, the former con man who has given up his shady ways to be Walt’s friend and sidekick, and Mary, the seventy-five-year-old apartment manager with a thirty-six-inch baseball bat, amazing words of wisdom from eighty-five-year-old Professor and Maggie, Walt’s sweetheart.

The book is a fast read with small byte size chapters full of action, adventure and humour. Walt and his senior set try and solve cases ranging from shop lifters, havoc creators, senior muggers to Rapists and counterfeit notes by the mob. The characters are endearing and the plot lines are simple. The book is full of witty jokes and I loved it. A quick read, I would surely recommend for a couple of laughs with mystery.

The Plot :

Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang is the third book by comedienne and late night E! TV show Chelsea Lately host Chelsea Handler. It is a collection of funny stories and essays from her life. Similar to her other books, it is just a collection of funny incidents that occurred in her life. The book includes the following stories:

1)    The Feeling – This is a story of how Chelsea got in touch with herself (quite literally).

2)    When Life Hands You Lemons, Squeeze Them Into Your Vodka – An account of how Chelsea manages to get a Cabbage Patch Kid, in order to fit in better with her peers.

3)    Grey Gardens – Even Chelsea Handler feels the blues.

4)    Dudley – This one is how the prank that Chelsea played on her then boyfriend, Ted, came to be.

8)    Dear Asshole – Chelsea’s Dad rents out his less than desirable property in Martha’s Vineyards.

9)    The Suspect – Email exchanges between Chelsea and her siblings while trying to convince their dad to sell his decrepit house in Martha’s Vineyard.

10) Chunk – Chelsea rescues a dog and names him Chunk.

11) Deep Thoughts By Chelsea Handler – A collection of open ended lies that Chelsea Handler told the people around her.

Over all it is a funny book that you can enjoy only if you keep your brains aside. It is a short read and sometimes you just need a little splash of stupidity in your life. I enjoyed the 4 or so hours it took me to read the book. Although this one was not as good as her first two books I still would recommend it to people looking for a little silliness in their lives. Trademarked with Chelsea Handler’s dry sense of humour and witty comebacks it makes for a truly fun read.
