Review :

Another thriller by Dan Brown, that moves at a break neck pace. The story is fantastical yet believable. This book has his trademark mix of hateful and likable characters. It is different from I his other works yet has his stamp all over it. I turn to a Dan Brown when I want to be totally immersed and lost in a story and this book was ideal for it. Overall, I loved the book. Highly recommended.

The Illuminati has now surfaced to carry out the final phase of its legendary vendetta against its most hated enemy — the Catholic Church.

With the countdown under way, Langdon jets to Rome to join forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and mysterious Italian scientist, to assist the Vatican in a desperate bid for survival.

Embarking on a frantic hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and the most secretive vault on earth, Langdon and Vetra follow a 400-year-old trail of ancient symbols that snakes across Rome toward the long-forgotten Illuminati lair…a clandestine location that contains the only hope for Vatican salvation.

Review :

This is the first novel of the Robert Langdon series which introduces us to the Harvard professor of Symbology. Like any Dan Brown thriller, it is fast paced and very very addictive. It is what I would call a genuine page turner. It sucks you in from the first page and leads to an amazing climax. Over all highly recommended.

The Plot :

The third book in the Robert Langdon series by Dan Brown, ‘The Lost Symbol’ is a fast paced thriller set in Washington D.C.

Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is invited to give a lecture at the United States Capitol by his mentor, Peter Solomon, who is the head of the Smithsonian Institution. He requests Langdon to bring a small, sealed package which he had entrusted to him many years ago. When Langdon arrives at the Capitol, however, he learns that the invitation he received was not from Solomon, but from Solomon’s kidnapper, Mal’akh, who has left Solomon’s severed right hand in the middle of the Capitol Rotunda.

The kidnaper then contacts Langdon, charging him with finding both the Mason’s Pyramid, which Masons believe is hidden somewhere underground in Washington D.C., and the Lost Word, otherwise he will execute Solomon. Langdon is then met by Trent Anderson, head of the Capitol police, and Inoue Sato, the head of the CIA’s Office of Security. Sato claims that Mal’akh poses a threat to the national security of the US, and that his capture is more important than Peter’s rescue, although she refuses to elaborate.

As Langdon deals with the events into which he has been thrust, Mal’akh destroys the Smithonsonian-sponsored laboratory of Dr. Katherine Solomon, Peter’s younger sister, where she has conducted experiments in Noetic Science, in the process ambushing and almost killing Katherine in a cat-and-mouse chase, but Katherine manages to escape and meet up with Langdon. Together they try and find the Lost Word in time to rescue Peter Solomon.

Digital Fortress – Dan Brown

Digital FortressTitle : Digital Fortress

Author : Dan Brown

ISBN-10 : 0312335164

ISBN-13 : 978-0312335168

Paperback : 512 pages

The Plot :

Dan Brown’s ‘Digital Fortress’ follows, Susan Fletcher, as she helps to protect the secrets of United States’ National Security Agency (NSA). The NSA is an ultra-secret, multibillion dollar agency that is one of the world’s most powerful intelligence agency. Heading it is Trevor Strathmore.

The story starts when NSA’s code breaking supercomputer, TRANSLTR, comes across a new complex code that it is not able to crack, called Digital Fortress. This means that someone has built a code that can surpass the TRANSLTR and this could have some serious repercussions. The head of the NSA, Trevor Strathmore, turns to his best cryptologist, Susan Fletcher to break the code. She tries her best to do everything she can and on the way discovers that the code was developed by Ensei Tankado, who was a disgruntled former employee of the NSA. Tankado believed that the NSA was intruding into peoples’ privacy in the name of providing security.

Tankado makes an elaborate plan with the help of his partner ‘NDAKOTA’ to auction off the algorithm of Digital Fortress, online. This would help the buyer to surpass the NSA’s security mechanisms and could become an issue of national security. Tankado has made provisions for the code to be released on the internet for free if he is killed, giving everyone access to it. He does die but of natural causes and Strathmore asks David Becker, Susan’s fiancé, to travel to Seville and recover a ring that Tankado was wearing when he died. The ring is suspected to have the code that unlocks Digital Fortress. However, Becker soon discovers that Tankado gave the ring away immediately before his death. Each person he questions in the search for the ring is murdered by Hulohot, a mysterious assassin. Meanwhile, telephone calls between “North Dakota” and Numataka, the chairman of a large computer company in Tokyo, reveal that North Dakota hired Hulohot to kill Tankado in order to gain access to the passcode on his ring and speed up the release of the algorithm.

At the NSA, Fletcher’s is sure based on her own investigation that Greg Hale, a fellow NSA employee, is North Dakota. Phil Chartrukian, an NSA technician who is unaware of the Digital Fortress code breaking failure, believes that Digital Fortress is a virus and conducts his own investigation into whether Strathmore allowed Digital Fortress to bypass Gauntlet, NSA’s virus/worm filter. However, Chartrukian is murdered by being pushed off the catwalk in the sub-levels of TRANSLTR by an unknown assailant. Since Hale and Strathmore were both in the sub-levels, Fletcher assumes that Hale is the killer; however, Hale claims that he witnessed Strathmore killing Chartrukian. In a race against time, the entire NSA’s databank at stake, Fletcher tries to uncover who is behind all the murders and the security breach, when she finds out some shocking secrets.

It was an interesting read, fast paced and intriguing. I loved the story line and the characters that seemed realistic at the same time had some exaggerated skills. Over all I liked the book very much and definitely recommend it to people looking for a fast read.

Inferno – Dan Brown

InfernoTitle : Inferno

Author : Dan Brown

ISBN-10: 0385537859

ISBN-13 : 978-0385537858

Paperback : 480 pages

The Plot :

In Dan Brown’s latest work ‘Inferno’, Harvard Professor of symbology Robert Langdon is back with a new mission. This time he is in a race for time trying to save the world from the evil plan of a crazy yet brilliant scientist ‘Bertrand Zobrist’ who has decided to eradicate more than half the world’s population by releasing a deadly virus, to solve the problem of over population.

The book starts with Langdon waking up in a hospital with a couple of stitches on is head and no recollection of how he got there. As soon as he wakes up he is shot at and manages to run for his life with the help of ‘Sienna Brooks’, a beautiful doctor who is tending to him. He realizes he is in Florence and the last memory he has is of walking down the campus of Harvard University.

With the help of Sienna, he manages to get some details of how he was admitted in the hospital, and finds a cylindrical vial of bio hazardous material in his jacket. Assuming that is what the shooter was looking for he plans to call the US consulate to ask for protection and gives them his hiding location. Soon the shooter arrives at the location and a SWAT team, cementing his suspicion that his government is the one who wants him dead.

Again Sienna and Langdon manage to outsmart the shooter and the SWAT teams and manage to escape in the nick of time. They plan to open the cylinder and investigate why someone would want it badly enough to kill and how Langdon came to possess it. Soon they discover that it is a medieval bone cylinder with some sort of high end projector that on being shaken projects an image of Botticelli’s Map of Hell. Being an expert in symbology and having seen this work of art before he realizes it is not the original work but a modified piece.

Using his skills he and Sienna try and uncover the hidden message in the artwork and this takes them across Florence, all the time being chased not just by the shooter but now also by a SWAT team. Meantime there is a submarine somewhere which houses a team of people who have been helping Zobrist with his mission, without knowing what the mission is in entirety or how dangerous it could be. The head of the World health Organization is also involved in this chase to stop the villain from unleashing a deadly virus on the world.

With multiple twists and turns and a nail biting finish, Inferno is an addictive piece of fiction. Dan Brown has maintained a break neck pace from the very first page and keeps the reader guessing while evoking a range of emotions throughout the book. I loved this book and I highly recommend it anyone who is looking for a fast paced thriller.
